CBC SOCCER WINS 8th STATE TITLE IN 2012
Who'da thunk it?

When the time came to start tryouts (Aug. 6, 2012) for the 2012 Boys High School Soccer Season, the Cadets of CBC were starting off a bit short. After taking roll call on the first day, 10 returning players did not answer when their names were called. That number included 8 players who had opted for the US Soccer Development Academy Program, one player who had serious concussion issue from the previous season, and a senior who opted for early retirement. Then to add salt to the wound, the first day of tryouts was the absolute worst in my 42 years of CBC Soccer. Welcome to my world!

Well, that was how things started - thank goodness for years of experience and a calm, patient approach. The second day was better, (it had to be, right) and at the end of the first week, one of the Academy players asked if he could re-join the team. Things were looking better! We established our season goals very early on - since every team except Chaminade lost players to the Academy, our goal was to be the best of the rest, and if we got a shot at Chaminade down the road, to beat them!

The approach taken by the coaching staff was the urgent need to raise the level of play amongst our team, in a short period of time. We have the first three weeks to conduct tryouts (a five day period), and train the team to prepare for the season ahead. Obviously, losing the number of players we did, also affected the quality of play and the experience level as well. We tried to speed the development process by implementing regular indoor training sessions where we played Futsal. The speed of play, number of touches, the decision-making opportunities, combined with the goal-scoring chances provided us the best way to move forward fast. The kids enjoyed the training and we could see a steady improvement in the group. We were still a long way from where we needed to be, but we were moving in the right direction.

We open our season with the always challenging CBC Tournament, featuring DeSmet, SLUH, Vianney and host CBC in a round-robin affair. You play all three teams and the winner is determined by a point system. CBC won the Tournament with 2 wins and a tie!! The first Championship of the season and it felt great! We had made a splash and we were staying above water. It was in the following week, that we lost 2 of our senior captains - one with a concussion and the other with a lower leg injury. They would not return until early October, yet the schedule remained, tough as it was. We were faced with the task of replacing these talented, experienced team leaders for the next 12 games, to include 2 major Tournaments. We managed to go 10-2 during that time, winning our bracket in the prestigious Gateway Classic Tournament and losing the Championship game in the CYC Tournament. It was during this time that we built our depth, character and our belief system that would carry us through the rest of season. As a team, we learned how to deal with adversity and how to depend on teammates to get through the tough times - which paid huge dividends in the end!

State Champions 2009

Boys,

I want to thank you for the wonderful season and the beautiful Final game. The Final represented a culmination of everything that we did and everything that we were about this past season. It all came together in one glorious game, where we demonstrated in so many ways, and that is why we are the Champions.

Welcome to a very exclusive group - a group that has in common the successful completion of a desired goal that is shared by many, but achieved by a very few. The memories will never leave you, nor will they ever diminish - they are yours to treasure for the rest of your lives. Welcome also into the history of CBC, CBC Soccer, CBC-SLUH rivalries, St. Louis soccer and St. Louis High School Soccer. You have left a permanent and lasting mark that will be there forever - you have stamped your greatness along with others of deserving status. People will applaud you for the result, but they should also applaud the process of what it took to reach that goal. Last night's game will fuel the fire for barroom banter for another 20 years among the die-hard CBC-SLUH alumni and fans who are always looking to one-up the other. People will say that CBC dominated a good SLUH team and did not allow SLUH any chance to play their game, much less be in the game. Congrats and enjoy !!

As a coach, I will always remember the Final as a special moment because so much was riding on the outcome and so much came together to produce the all-time best game possible. When you can take away what the other team wants and needs to do and still play your game at the highest level, it just doesn't get any better that that. When we met on Saturday morning to discuss the tactics for the game, I had a good feeling that everyone shared in the idea and thought that it was the best way to play. Part two was to play it on the field - it was as close to a perfect game as I could have ever imagined (Fairshon gave you a 100 rating, 'nuff said). But maybe more important to me was how maturely you approached and played the game - there were so many great efforts and wonderful play that it seemed that the game was easy and fun for you, even though it was a Championship game played before 5,000 people. We asked to relax and enjoy the moment, have fun and do your best -- that is just what you did and your performance was awesome. There was only one team playing in the Final, and you played to a Championship level, thus deserving to be recognized for the Champions that you are. I am sad to see it all end, but could not be happier for the way that it ended. Every one of you are a special part of this success and everyone together made it happen.

Thanks for the memories -- I have truly been blessed to be able to be a part of this with you.
